A lot of people seem to think that “Going with Your Gut” is simply following instincts.  Doing what our animal being thinks is what should be done, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Going with your gut is intuition.  It’s going with what feels right.  And what most of us do when we’re hit with an intuitive idea is allow our rational mind to interfere with that insight.

Our logical mind is poorly programmed.  We often get the idea that doing something is not a good idea but we go ahead and do it anyway because our logical mind will tell us, what have you got to lose?  It won’t hurt you.  Funny thing is that it always ends in regret.  “Why did I do that?”, “Seemed like a good idea at the time.”  I call it “Hold my beer and watch this moment”.  Your intuition says “DON’T DO IT” and yet we go ahead.

I can give you an example of this.  One of my relationships, a long, long time ago, ended in disaster.  On the day that I was moving my furniture to my spouse’s house, I had this nagging feeling that I was doing something wrong.  But my rational mind said, “Dude!!!”, yeah it calls me that, “You made a COMMITMENT!” and I followed through with it.  As a matter of fact, when the idea of cohabitating came up I felt really shitty about it, but I couldn’t bring myself to say that it wasn’t a good idea.  My rational mind blew it.

On the other hand, and you may have experienced this too, you get an intuitive idea in the shower, a way of earning extra income, or a solution to a problem you’re facing.  Maybe you thought you’d like to start your own business but your logical mind steps in and starts throwing ideas at you like, “What if it fails?”, or “You don’t know anything about running a business.” and your desire fades and you think to agree with your logical mind.

So the lessons I’ve learned is that intuition is something to be paid attention to.  It should never be dismissed and the logical mind should never interfere with it.  If you get an intuitive idea and you have no idea of how to do it, follow your gut.  Your Mastermind group should be able to help you figure things out.

Something that should be kept in mind is that you don’t need to be THE expert at anything you want to do.   If you need specialized knowledge but you don’t have it, you have options.  You can go get that specialized knowledge or you can work with someone who has that specialized knowledge.

As an example, I have no idea how to keep books.  Therefore I have, in my Mastermind group, a bookkeeper that is amazing!  We co-create an end result that we both want to achieve on a personal and professional basis and the relationship is strong and mutually rewarding.  My bookkeeper doesn’t even live in the same city I do.

It’ll soon be time to hire a virtual assistant and salespeople.  They can be in any part of the world!  This is where my intuition will come into play as I’m interviewing prospective employees.

If your gut says “Do It” then listen to it.  You may not know what you need to do or how to do it, just take the first step and you’ll be surprised how your intuition guides you in the right direction.  Your heart will never steer you wrong.

Go with your gut!
